How to Froth Milk Without a Steam Wand (3 Easy Methods)

How would you steam milk without an espresso machine and attached steam wand? A perfectly frothed milk transforms an ordinary cup of coffee into a latte, cappuccino, or macchiato masterpiece. But what if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand? No worries—you can still achieve rich, creamy froth at home using simple tools.

At Blended Bean Coffee, we believe great coffee should be accessible to everyone. We don't all have fancy espresso machines with unlimited steam coming from them. Here are three easy ways to froth milk without steam, including one that requires no electricity at all.

How to Heat the Milk

Since we won't be using steam to froth the milk, we also can't rely on it to add the heat either! While it is completely possible to do any of these methods with cold milk, it would be more traditional to heat up the milk and it would also maintain the heat of the espresso.

How to Heat Milk:

  1. Pour slightly more than the desired amount of milk into a heat proof bowl, cup, or pot.
  2. Select your heating method:
    1. Microwave
    2. Stovetop
    3. Oven
    4. Campfire
  3. Heat the milk while stirring often.
  4. Occasionally, remove from the heat and continue to stir and monitor that the bottom does not scald.
  5. Remove from the heat entirely once it has reached between 140–150°F (should feel hot, but not burning to the touch).

The Methods

  1. The Jar Shake Method
  2. The Handheld Frother Method
  3. The Standalone Frother Method

The Jar Shake Method (No Electricity Needed)

Best for: Camping, off-the-grid coffee lovers, or anyone with a mason jar

What You Need:

  • heat-safe jar with a lid
    • Mason jars work well, but they will get a little warm on your hands when shaking since there is no insulation.
    • An insulated water bottle is one of the best things since it protects your hands from the heat and it doesn't allow the heat to escape from the milk.
  • Warm milk

How to Froth:

  1. Pour warm milk into the jar, filling it no more than halfway to leave room for froth.
  2. Seal the lid tightly and shake vigorously for 30–60 seconds.
  3. Let the bubbles settle for a few seconds until you just have the stable frothed milk, then pour over your coffee.

Result: Creates airy, foamy milk—not as silky as steamed milk but perfect to elevate a coffee when no tools are available.

Tip: Add a blender bottle shaker to add even more bubbles and easier frothing!

The French Press Method (No Electricity Needed)

Best for: at home or work when you have a limited toolset at your disposal

What You Need:

  • A french press
  • Warm milk

How to Froth:

  1. Pour warm milk into french press, making sure to leave room for froth.
  2. Place the lid with the plunger on the press.
  3. Press the plunger up and down through the milk in a firm, steady motion.
  4. Soon you will notice a nice, creamy foam start to appear!

Result: Creates an even, small bubble in an easy to pour form!

Tip: You can add spices or other items to the french press to infuse into the warm milk as it froths.

The Handheld Frother Method

Best for: Quick, no-mess frothing with minimal effort

What You Need:

  • battery-operated handheld frother
  • Warm milk (140–150°F)

How to Froth:

  1. Heat your milk and pour it into a cup or pitcher.
  2. Submerge the frother just below the surface and turn it on.
  3. Move it in slow circles for 15–30 seconds until the milk is thick and velvety.

Result: Finer microfoam, close to café-quality steamed milk, but still not quite as smooth. Perfect for making lattes at home or adding a little extra body to your coffee!

Tip: Occasionally move the frother up and down into the foam to ensure even frothing.

Standalone Milk Frother

Best for: At home frothing that doesn't require pre-heating

What You Need:

  • Milk frothing appliance
  • Cold Milk

How to Froth:

  1. Attach frothing spring to the bottom of the appliance
  2. Add cold milk
  3. Select appropriate setting and begin frothing

Results: The smoothest microfoam you can achieve at home without a steam wand. This is capable of heating and whipping milk to soft peaks.

Tip: These appliances often over-froth the milk, so watch the consistency carefully
